The 1984 Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the 6th edition of the event, organized by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the IOC. It was held in Long Beach, California, United States from July 30 to August 7, 1984. 8 teams split into 2 pools and top 2 teams in each pool will enter the semi-final. China lost 1-3 to USA in preliminary round and won Japan in semi-final. USA won Cuba in semi-final. In 1980, powerhouse teams including China, Japan, USA didn't participate the Olympic for political reason. In 1984, same happened. Soviet Union, Cuba and West Germany boycotted the games. Post-Match Commentary : China achieved a remarkable feat by completing a three-peat, winning the World Cup in 1981, the World Volleyball Championships in 1982 and the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. Later, they secured a five-peat by clinching the World Cup in 1985 and the World Championships in 1986. Legendary player and coach Lang Ping, standing at 1.85m and just 24 years old, played a pivotal role in these successes. After 1985, she retired from the national team. She earned the nickname “Iron Hammer” and her influence on Chinese volleyball was immense. For the next four decades, only one other Chinese player, Zhu Ting, could match her impact. In the mid-1980s and 1990s, women’s volleyball standards were exceptionally high. The Libero role hadn’t been introduced yet, and unlike today, scores weren’t dominated by just a few players. Players were incredibly versatile, excelling in receiving, defence, blocking and spiking. To become a starting player, each position required a high standard. Tactics were far more complex back then compared to the simpler game we see now. Even Lang Ping could perform running and quick attacks at that time.
