The final movement of the Suite, "El Anod" is a middle eastern sounding composition composed by Russell Snyder for the NUEComer Jazz Award.
Originally intended as an Etude, "El Anod" evolved to become a part of the NURJazz Suite 2026. There is a rich history of jazz musicians like Miles Davis and John Coltrane writing etudes for themselves to practice some concept they were working on. One of the most famous etudes is Davis' "Donna Lee".
Drawing inspiration to build his own musicality, Russell Snyder wrote El Anod to practice playing harmonic minor scales from the third degree of a major seventh chord. The melody used this technique almost exclusively to create it's unique, ethnic sounding lines.
The name of the piece "El Anod" is actually "Donna Lee" backwards with double letter removed. This name convention is also inspired by Miles Davis as his famous composition "Nardis" is said to be taken from the last name of Ben Sidran ("Sidran" backwards is "Nardis").
