The History of Salt: How Salt Became One of History's Most Valuable Resources

Salt looks ordinary. But for thousands of years, it was worth building roads, taxes, trade routes, and even revolutions around. In this documentary, we follow the history of salt, from one of the oldest known salt-production sites in the world in Romania, to the mines of Hallstatt, the salt roads of Rome, China's state monopoly, France's hated gabelle, the Sahara caravans, and Gandhi's 1930 Salt March. Why would early farmers burn wood for years to boil a salty spring? How did salt become a source of state power? And why did a tax on a mineral help push people toward protest and revolution?
