Is every robot a form of Physical AI?
No. Movement alone is not enough.
A traditional robot can execute predefined instructions repeatedly without learning from or adapting to its environment. It may be highly sophisticated mechanically while still operating primarily through predetermined rules.
Physical AI introduces something different: adaptive intelligence coupled directly to physical action.
Its operating loop becomes:
Sense → Estimate → Decide → Act → Observe → Adapt
The machine must continuously interpret its environment, estimate its physical state under uncertainty, determine what to do, act, observe the consequences, and modify future behavior.
The distinction between a conventional robot and Physical AI is therefore not a perfectly sharp boundary. It is better understood as a continuum of coupling and consequence.
The more tightly perception, inference, decision-making, action, and feedback are integrated, the further the system moves toward Physical AI.
So instead of asking:
“Does this robot have AI?”
we should ask:
“How adaptively is its intelligence coupled to the physical world?”
