Gravedigger Explains The RFK Funeral Train & Why His Grave Took 3 Years to Finish
The casket was too wide. Robert Kennedy’s coffin would not fit through the doors of the Pennsylvania Railroad observation car assigned to carry him from New York to Washington — so they removed a window panel, slid the casket in sideways, and replaced the window. What followed was a twenty-one car train, a four-hour scheduled run that took more than eight hours, and somewhere between one million and two million people who came out to stand along two hundred and twenty-five miles of track. This video covers the whole sequence from the cemetery side: what the family chose and what the record says Kennedy himself had wanted, the night arrival at Arlington nobody planned for because the crowds slowed the train for hours, the floodlights trucked in and the candles distributed to mourners standing beyond the reach of the electric light, and the burial that most people don’t know was temporary — a white wooden cross, a simple opening in the slope of Section 45, a placeholder while the family figured out what came next. The permanent site was designed by I.M. Pei and cost seven hundred and forty-seven thousand dollars. The white cross was stolen before the permanent grave was finished. So was its replacement. The permanent grave required a disinterment — three and a half hours on the night of December 1, 1971. And the plot beside Bobby’s was always reserved. Ethel Kennedy was buried there on November 25, 2024 — the sixty-first anniversary of JFK’s funeral. Fifty-six years, five months, and seventeen days between the first burial and the second. The observation car is still in a storage barn in North Philadelphia.
