Six hundred thousand men on foot, not counting children. Read literally, the Book of Exodus describes some two million people leaving Egypt and wandering the desert for forty years. But when we try to follow their steps, the trail breaks: Pharaoh has no name, no one knows where the sea was, and Egypt says nothing.
In this case we keep four things apart: what the TEXT says, the EVIDENCE that has been found, the HYPOTHESES researchers propose, and what circulates UNVERIFIED. Rekhmire's brickmakers, the cities of Pithom and Rameses, the papyrus that logged a few herders at the border, the isotopes of Avaris, the Hyksos, the math of water and food, the digs at Kadesh Barnea, the "Pharaoh's chariot wheels" of Nuweiba, and the Merneptah Stele, the first known time history writes the word "Israel."
