Baby Wakes When Put Down? 4 Reasons Why
If a baby wakes the second they’re put down, even when they seemed deeply asleep in someone’s arms, there may be more happening than a difficult cot transfer. In this video, we explore why babies wake when put down, what happens during the transition from being held to the cot, and four different reasons a baby may wake during a transfer.
Babies experience a significant sensory change when they move from a warm, moving parent to a still sleep surface. The timing of the transfer, the baby’s stage of sleep and the movement involved can all make waking more likely.
But sometimes the transfer itself isn’t the real problem.
Lyndsey, paediatric nurse, IBCLC and co-founder of the Holistic Sleep Coaching Program, explains why looking beyond the sleep behaviour can help parents and professionals understand what may actually be happening.
We cover:
• Why babies wake when put down
• The sensory change between being held and lying in a cot
• How sleep stages can affect cot transfers
• Ways to make the transition from arms to cot less abrupt
• Why lying flat may sometimes be uncomfortable
• When feeding, digestive discomfort, breathing or growth may be worth considering
• Why contact naps are not automatically a bad habit
• What parents can try when cot transfers repeatedly fail
• When moving away from contact naps may be helpful for a family
A baby waking during a cot transfer does not automatically mean they have developed a bad habit or need to learn to sleep independently.
For some babies, small adjustments to timing, sensory input and the transfer itself can help. For others, the important question is not simply, “How do we make this baby stay asleep when we put them down?” but “Why are they waking when we do?”
