The Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak (Phase 1) is 99.98% complete. The highway provides a seamless, toll-free four-lane dual carriageway that has completely transformed land travel across the state.
The route stretching from Sarikei to Kuching spans approximately 320 to 360 kilometers (depending on your exact start and end points) and passes through major hubs like Sri Aman and Serian.
Travel Time & Road Conditions
Drastic Time Reduction: Before the dual-carriageway upgrade, driving this route could easily take 7 to 9 hours due to single-lane bottlenecks, slow-moving trucks, and uneven road surfaces. Today, you can comfortably cruise from Sarikei to Kuching in about 4.5 to 5.5 hours under normal traffic conditions.
Road Design: The route consists entirely of a wide, fully paved four-lane dual carriageway (two lanes in each direction), divided by a central median or guardrail. This makes overtaking long-haul trucks effortless and significantly increases safety.
The "Jakar" Section (Sarikei): While the vast majority of the highway is completely smooth, the section near Jakar (just outside Sarikei) faced minor terrain and design adjustments during construction but is fully functional and open.

Major Milestones & Towns Along the Route
When driving down from Sarikei to Kuching, you will pass through several key towns that double as excellent rest stops:
Sarikei to Sri Aman: You will bypass Betong and drive through the hilly, scenic interior landscapes. The notorious Bukit Begunan section—which previously suffered from major soil settlement issues—has been completely stabilized with engineered slopes.
Sri Aman to Serian: This stretch takes you past beautiful vistas of traditional longhouses, local fruit stalls, and vast palm oil estates.
Serian to Kuching: The final leg is exceptionally smooth, turning into a highly urbanized, well-lit multi-lane highway as you approach the capital city.
Driving Tips & Infrastructure
Ample P-Turns and U-Turns: To maintain local connectivity without building thousands of expensive interchanges, the highway utilizes wide P-turns and dedicated U-turn lanes for changing directions. Keep an eye out for oncoming traffic slowing down to turn.
Fuel & Amenities: Modern commercial rest stops, restaurants, and updated petrol stations (like Petronas and Shell) are widely available near the intersections of major towns like Serian, Sri Aman, and Betong.
Toll-Free: The entire length of the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak remains completely toll-free for all motorists.
