(23) Today begins with a sweet gesture from Grandpa—he heats up a big pot of water on the stove so I can soak and wash some clothes. While the clothes are soaking, I go inside to do a general cleaning of the house—wash the windows, dust the windowsills, and vacuum. While cleaning, I find a precious sentimental treasure: my grandmother’s old jewelry. Trying on her vintage pieces brought back so many precious childhood memories. After picking fresh ripe tomatoes from the garden, I whip up a quick comfort meal in the kitchen—boiled eggs, a delicious egg and carrot salad, sandwiches, and some barbecue. Later, I head to the chicken coop to collect fresh eggs, and I finish the day by rinsing and hanging our fresh laundry to dry in the summer sun.
