Change your way of thinking about percussions

Forget drum machine samples. In this session I build a full percussion element in Ableton out of nothing but white noise, and it changes how you think about what a drum sound actually is. I start with a plain noise generator and an envelope for the snip, then chain it through delay with ping pong, amp instead of a compressor for overtones, a phaser for stereo movement, and heavy filter feedback. Play the filter cutoff with an LFO at odd rates like 5/16 and you get an offbeat rhythm without programming a single note. The result is a synthesizer that is also a percussion instrument, one you can shape instead of just picking from a sample folder.
