Long sounds like drones eat up frequency space in your mix, short ones don't. I explain how to think in frequencies and use a simple side chain trick to carve out room for your kick without killing the pad underneath. I set up a kick, some percussion and a drone, then walk through side chaining the drone off the kick using the glue compressor, plus doing the same on your aux sends so reverb and delay don't fill up the mix either. Small trick, big difference once you hear it with and without.
