This past May I had the amazing chance to drive down to Wichita Kansas and the Sedgwick County Zoo to see their unprecedented baby boom - four African elephant calves all born in 2025 within just a few months of each other.
This is the first time so many elephant calves have been born in such a short time span at any AZA accredited institution within the United States. All four calves (Bomani, Asali, Kijani, and Dakari) are half siblings through their father Callee who is also the father of all 5 calves at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo.
It was a breathtaking once in a lifetime experience to get to see these four calves (all just under or over 1 year old at the time of filming) playing and exploring their habitat along with their mothers.
Callee was in musth in an adjacent exhibit but would still interact with the other elephants through the fences occasionally.
