Imagine switching off the heating, throwing away your mattress and lying down on frozen ground for a 16-hour winter night. In a study published in 1958, local men in the Australian desert slept comfortably on nights close to freezing, while volunteers next to them shivered and slept badly. So how did Ice Age people survive the night? We follow five clues: 200,000-year-old grass beds, mammoth-bone houses, the eyed needle, the human body's own cold tricks, and a pit of bones in Spain that has scientists arguing about hibernation.
