Britain in the 1930s was a decade of social change, economic hardship, and growing political tensions. As the Great Depression affected millions, the country faced the rise of fascism at home and the increasing threat of Nazi Germany.
Newly colorized archival footage brings everyday life into focus, from the popularity of cinema and jazz to the achievements of pioneering aviator Amy Johnson. But unemployment and poverty also sparked protests, including the Jarrow March led by Ellen Wilkinson and the strike by the herring girls of Great Yarmouth.
As Adolf Hitler consolidated power in Germany, Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists gained support in Britain. The Battle of Cable Street in 1936 brought thousands into the streets of London to oppose the Blackshirts, while the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass challenged restrictions on access to the countryside.
The controversial 1935 football match between England and Nazi Germany reveals further tensions as Britain sought to avoid another war.
Explore life in 1930s Britain through colorized historical footage and the events that shaped the decade.
