Infernal Legions is a massive map created by myolden as a tribute to Demonic Hordes from Alien Vendetta. His story about discovering Doom and how Alien Vendetta/Sunlust introduced him into mapping and the world of custom is one that I can relate to heavily. Alien Vendetta was also one of my first WADs, so I too hold it near and dear.
Not only is this a major surprise, but it’s also super convenient given that I just finished Alien Vendetta on the channel. So I figured why the hell not. Let’s see what myolden does with Demonic Hordes!

myolden’s tribute to Demonic Hordes is a titanic reimagining of the original given a whole new coat of paint. He turns the original highlights into brand-new arenas and spikes them with super deadly fights. This is how you do a tribute map. myolden touches on a lot of the same themes and set pieces that the original does while putting his own unique spin on the whole concept.
I’ve never seen myolden make a map not only as large as this, but as hard as this, so I was completely shaken when I saw the kill count and size of the map. After giving it a couple of play throughs, I feel like myolden should make more of these because he’s excellent at it! All the areas feel very fair and doable without being insurmountable, and you get tons and tons of resources to get the job done. This is why I took things a little slower, because if you just prioritize survival and clearing out hordes one by one, you’ll be able to fully restock and move on. It minimizes your risk of death by a ton. Don’t get me wrong, though, this map is still a brutalizing crucible engineered to break the spirit of the player. It’s a fitting difficulty and size given the original map.
Speaking of breaking spirits, Lee Jackson’s original, amazing MIDI “You Suck!” made Demonic Hordes what it was. Its atmosphere is essential for that map. LVENdead’s MIDI inspired by You Suck! is another great example of paying tribute. He effortlessly creates an atmosphere equal to Lee Jackson’s MIDI but adds a new spin on it. I love all the guitars and constant drums that really add a sense of aggression and urgency to the whole experience.
My favorite fight in here might just be the finale. It’s such a rush sprinting around at a million miles an hour spraying BFG everywhere, just praying that you grab the next megasphere in time. The intensity reaches a screaming high in that arena. I also love the cathartic reimagining of the penultimate area with all the doors, and the church area which becomes one of the most dangerous parts of the map.
Incredible work myolden. I’m astounded that you’re able to churn out maps this fast.
