Mid Pull is a drill that teaches you to clean efficiently and avoid banging your forearms with a kettlebell. It is a mid-way point between the backswing and the rack position where, instead of getting the Kb fly forward as you would in the one-arm swing, you guide it close to the body by rowing your elbow back while the KB is floating weightless. The KB remains an extension of your forearm, just as in the swing, however it is now close to your body. Once the KB begins to fall, do not push it out, but instead let the arm straighten close to the body and guide it into a backswing. The most common errors are: 1. bicep curling the kettlebell as opposed to rowing it. 2. pushing the KB out after rowing, rather than keeping it close to the body. A handy drill, once you have gained competence in the mid pull, is a combo of mid pull and clean. You will not be able to pull your elbow as far back during the clean, but the better your range of motion in mid pull the better it can be in the clean, and the more efficient and painless your clean will be. As in all KB ballistics, we keep our shoulders packed, back straight, and core braced. The thumb position on the back swing is up to you. Dismount the kettlebell safely and professionally.
