In 1950 an article in Eve's Weekly blamed the teachings of the Buddha for the downfall of women in India. In May and June 1951, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar answered it in the Maha Bodhi journal — and went to the root of the charge.
What you'll see:
• The Buddha's reported words to Ananda — and why Ambedkar argues monk editors put them there
• Ananda's trial, and Mahaprajapati Gotami's request to be ordained
• When women studied the Vedas: Gargi and Maitrei in public debate
• Manu's verses on women: a wife who could be abandoned or sold, but never set free
• His conclusion: not the Buddha but Manu was responsible
Every argument and conclusion in this film is Dr. Ambedkar's own, from his published text. Nothing here is the channel's opinion.
