In 2022, Ghana could not pay its debts. By 2026, it had taken back control of its gold, completed its IMF programme, pushed the cedi up 41% and hit record reserves. Here are the 20 projects behind that comeback.
Ghana is Africa's number one gold producer, but for years much of that gold was smuggled out of the country. In 2025, President John Dramani Mahama created GoldBod, the Ghana Gold Board, to buy gold from small-scale miners and bring the dollars home. In this video, we look at what Ghana has built since: the Big Push road programme, free first-year university fees, the 24-Hour Economy, MahamaCares, record exports, the Buipe solar project, the fight for reparations at the UN, and the Accra–Kumasi Expressway.
