Starting at Terukuni Shrine, this 4K walk continues through the local shopping streets before reaching Tenmonkan, one of Kagoshima’s best-known downtown districts. Terukuni Shrine is dedicated to Shimazu Nariakira, the 11th lord of the Satsuma Domain, who promoted the Shuseikan industrial development project and played an important role in Japan’s early modernization. The shrine was established in 1864. From the shrine, the walk continues through the shopping streets toward Tenmonkan. The name “Tenmonkan” dates back to 1779, when Shimazu Shigehide established Meijikan, a facility for astronomical observation and calendar-making, in this area. Today, Tenmonkan remains one of Kagoshima’s main districts for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Enjoy a casual summer journey through Kagoshima at walking pace, from the calm atmosphere around the shrine to the livelier streets of Tenmonkan.
