For this episode of The Wealthy Contractor, we’re talking about one of the biggest (and most overlooked) risks in a business: your people. Your employees are often your greatest asset, but that also means they can become a major point of risk when your business depends heavily on one person’s knowledge, relationships, skills, or ability to generate revenue. Listen in as we talk about why business owners often don’t recognize this risk, especially as a company grows. As we delegate responsibilities and build a team, we’re essentially replacing ourselves with employees, but what happens when one of those key people leaves, becomes disabled, gets sick, or dies? The impact can be huge, especially when that person has become the center of knowledge or has strong relationships with major clients and other employees. We discuss what it really means to protect your people and how it goes beyond workplace safety; it also means creating an environment where employees feel valued, appreciated, heard, and invested in. We explore the importance of understanding what motivates individual employees, recognizing that not everyone is motivated by money or the same types of rewards. Building a strong culture and giving people reasons to stay can help reduce the risk of unexpectedly losing key employees, while also recognizing that sometimes difficult decisions are necessary. From there, we get into strategies for protecting a business against the loss of a key person. We discuss key-person incentive plans, including “golden handcuffs,” as well as life insurance, buy-sell agreements, and disability insurance. We share real-life examples of businesses that experienced the sudden death or disability of a key person and the consequences of not having a plan in place, but, as we get into, financial protection is only part of the solution. We also need to spread out our knowledge and responsibilities. We discuss documenting standard operating procedures and workflows, cross-training employees, developing future leaders, and creating succession plans within the company. The goal isn’t simply to make people replaceable; it’s to make the business more resilient! We wrap up the episode with a couple of questions every business owner should ask: What would happen if each of your five most important people couldn’t come to work tomorrow? If your greatest asset walked out the door, how much of your company would walk out with them? Those questions can reveal where your biggest risks are and where you need to start building a plan.
