4 Calm Classical Pieces | Handel Passacaglia, Liszt Consolation No. 3, Schumann, Mendelssohn

Four pieces, four composers, and about a hundred and thirty years between the oldest and the newest. All four are quiet. The Handel comes first and it is much older than the rest. It is the last of six movements in the Suite in G minor, published in London in 1720 as part of the set now usually called the Eight Great Suites, and written for harpsichord rather than piano. Most people who know this music do not know it from Handel at all. They know the 1893 arrangement Johan Halvorsen made of it for violin and viola, which is the version that travels. Then Schumann's Traumerei, which is simply the German word for dreaming. It is the seventh of thirteen short pieces in Kinderszenen, from 1838, and it is far and away the best known thing in the set. Liszt's Consolation No. 3 in D flat is third. It was not in the earlier version of the Consolations. He assembled the set, then went back and added this one, and it was published in 1850. The Mendelssohn closes it, the shortest of the four. Op. 19 No. 4 in A major, from the first book of his Songs Without Words, a set he kept adding to for most of his life. This one has carried the nickname Confidence for a long time. Fourteen minutes altogether. No talking and no interruptions, so it works for reading, for working, or for the end of a day. The piece titles and start times are in the chapter list, and every one of them is also up on its own if you want to come back to a single one.
