In May 1945, a week after Germany surrendered, American investigators from the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey sat down with Albert Speer, Hitler's Minister of Armaments, in a castle on the Baltic coast. Their question was simple: of all the bombs America dropped on Germany, which ones actually hurt?
His answer came down to one day: May 12, 1944. In this file we follow the oil campaign through the Survey's own report and Speer's own words: the 13 synthetic fuel plants, Leuna's 22 attacks, the collapse of aviation gasoline from 175,000 tons to 5,000, the Ardennes offensive that ran out of fuel, and the letter that predicted Germany's collapse within 4 to 8 weeks.
