Nothing here happens where you can see it. Steel is coming off the blade on every single pass, but the only evidence is the grey running off the stone into the tray below, and by the end of an hour there is nothing visible to show for it at all. A sharp blade and a blunt one look exactly the same. It only shows in the hand.
The stone is going too. Every blade takes a little off the top of it, so eventually the stone has to be flattened and started again — the softer thing wins here, which is backwards from what you would expect.
There is no clock and no gauge. The angle has to be held the same on every stroke without measuring it, and the moment it comes right announces itself in the sound rather than in anything you can look at. That takes about twenty years to learn and cannot be written down.
The cost of all this is that the knife gets smaller. Forty years of being properly looked after and a good blade is half the width it started at, which is the price of it having stayed sharp the whole time.
Just clear of the splash where the bench stays dry, a small black cat has claimed the one spot in the room that never gets wet. Golden eyes half open, water running past a foot away, not a drop on the coat.
Underneath it all the bass sits deep and analog, with an intimate baritone drifting over tight funk guitar and a dreamy Rhodes, warm tape hiss and a soft crackle of vinyl underneath. Ninety minutes of unhurried 70s grooves, built to stay in the background while you work.
