Welcome back to HAUNTED ENGLAND! 👻 This time, we’re visiting the historic St Margaret’s Church in Ockley, Surrey, a beautiful old English church with a fascinating history, remarkable connections to America, and a graveyard that holds some personal memories for me. I’ve visited this churchyard before, but this time I’m returning to explore the church itself and revisit the graveyard where I had a spooky experience around 18 months ago. What made that previous visit so memorable? Join me as we explore this atmospheric location and discover its remarkable past. ⛪ INSIDE ST MARGARET’S CHURCH We explore the historic interior, including the medieval baptismal font, the bell tower, its intriguing inscriptions, the beautiful alabaster decoration and the painting of the Last Supper. The church has origins dating back to the 12th century, with much of the main nave dating from the 14th century. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1699–1700, and its history includes a fascinating local tradition connecting its bell with America’s famous Liberty Bell. 📜 FASCINATING HISTORICAL CONNECTIONS St Margaret’s has connections to two particularly interesting figures from history. 🌿 Nicholas Culpeper, the famous 17th-century herbalist and author, was baptised here in 1616. His father was the rector of the church. 🇺🇸 The Reverend Henry Whitfield also served as vicar here before travelling to New England in 1639, where he helped establish the settlement of Guilford in what is now Connecticut. ⚰️ RETURNING TO THE GRAVEYARD After exploring the church, I head back outside to walk through the old churchyard, revisiting the place where I experienced something unsettling on a previous visit. Historic churchyards are fascinating places, full of stories, local history and reminders of the generations who came before us. And sometimes, a return visit gives you an entirely different perspective on a place. Could this be one of the most atmospheric churchyards in Surrey? Watch until the end to hear about my previous experience.
