Can two hours actually hold an 800-page Dickens novel?
"The Personal History of David Copperfield" is Armando Iannucci's visually inventive take on Charles Dickens, closing out the Institutions Eating Themselves series after "In the Loop" and "The Death of Stalin." Dev Patel stars as the title character, with Tilda Swinton as his fierce aunt Betsey Trotwood and Hugh Laurie as the gentle, troubled Mr. Dick. Pete and Andy dig into how Iannucci compresses a massive book into two hours through wall projections and stage-narration framing, and debate whether the film's color-conscious casting changes what the story means. It's a wildly creative spin on a 175-year-old novel, closing out Iannucci's three-film run with something completely different from where it started.
