Today on Sailing Folly, I’m tackling another project on our 1984 Catalina 27, rebedding the wooden cabin-top handrail.
Water intrusion is one of the biggest enemies of an older sailboat, and any piece of hardware attached to the deck can eventually become a potential leak. For this repair, I remove the handrail fasteners from inside the cabin, carefully lift the rail from the deck, clean away decades of old bedding material, prep the surfaces, and reinstall everything using butyl tape to create a new watertight seal.
Like so many projects on Folly, it’s not a huge renovation, it’s another small job that helps preserve this 42-year-old sailboat and gets her a little closer to where I want her to be.
