What the Hopi Said Was Hidden Behind the Sealed Doors of Chaco

For centuries, long before archaeologists arrived, the Hopi already had an answer. They knew who built the great stone cities of the Southwest, why those cities were abandoned, and what happened to the people who left. They called them the Hisatsinom — the Ancients. Not a lost people. Family. This documentary sets two independent records side by side. One is written and institutional: the tree-ring drought data from the University of Arizona, the thirty thousand tons of sandstone at Pueblo Bonito, the processed bones from the Four Corners, the six-fingered ruling line found at Chaco in 2016, and the great kivas whose roof timbers were deliberately removed before their doorways were sealed. The other is oral and Indigenous: the Hopi and Navajo accounts of a place where the balance broke, and the clan migration stories that — when mapped — line up with the ruins archaeologists would not excavate for another hundred years. Where the two accounts agree, they are shown together. Where they differ, both are presented. Nothing here is offered as a settled conclusion — because the most interesting part of Chaco is not what ended it, but what it was for.
