Capturing the experiences of my Student Exchange Program in Athens, Greece from Sept-Dec 2026. Mostly a memory bank for me, my family & friends to look back on someday. But if you're planning a student exchange or study-abroad journey, I hope you enjoy coming along! Athens is a city where ancient history and modern life exist side by side. Known as the birthplace of democracy and Greek philosophy, it has a fascinating story behind its name, too. According to Greek mythology, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, competed with Poseidon, the god of the sea, to become the city's patron deity. While Poseidon offered a saltwater spring, Athena gifted the people an olive tree, symbolising peace and prosperity. They chose Athena's gift, and the city was named Athens in her honour. Today, the magnificent Parthenon atop the Acropolis stands as a reminder of this rich heritage. Living here during my student exchange has been a chance to experience this history while discovering the city through everyday life. I explore bits and pieces of Athens, from Syntagma Square, the city's central gathering point, where the Greek Parliament stands and the changing of the Presidential Guards takes place, to Monastiraki, one of Athens' liveliest neighbourhoods. With its bustling flea market, little shops, street vendors, cafés, and narrow streets, Monastiraki has a charm of its own. It's also a wonderful place to catch glimpses of the Acropolis rising above the city, reminding you of the history that surrounds you everywhere in Athens. Like the Ancient Agora was the main public gathering place in ancient Athens for markets, meetings, and discussions. But life abroad isn't just about sightseeing! I've also included little snippets from my everyday routine like attending university meetings, grocery shopping, and figuring out all the small things. One particularly horrible experience was buying an e-SIM that simply refused to work for 5 WHOLE DAYS. And, of course, a little movie outing at Ciné Paris, an open air movie theatre to watch Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. I absolutely loved it ! There's something special about watching a film in a different city and adding that little experience to your memories of living abroad. This isn't a complete Athens travel guide or a checklist of all the famous landmarks. It's simply my little collection of random moments, new experiences, everyday errands, and places I've crossed paths with while living here. Sometimes, the best way to experience a city is through the little things you never planned to remember.
