Amateur 16mm film footage from the 1930s showing passengers having fun on the deck of the (then) RMS Orion during a cruise somewhere in Northern Europe in 1937. I say 1937 because the film can this came in says 1937. However writing on film cans can sometimes be wrong...but it is definitely pre-war because further material on this reel shows places which were later severely bombed. The Orion was launched in 1934 and went into service for the Orient Steam Navigation Company in 1935 (retired in 1963). She had a GRT of 23,371 tons and was used as an Ocean Liner for the Australia/Pacific route, but was also used for cruises around Europe part of the year. By all accounts a very stylish ship, whose design broke with tradition and had quite a modern, more minimal and deco style than had been typical of ships this size. This footage covers one of the Northern Europe cruises, though I am not sure what the destination was. I have mentioned before that sadly we tend to get very few moving shots of the interior of ships at this time from amateur film makers because lighting and the film available made this almost impossible. However, it is better to see something of the ship and the fun people had on deck, than nothing at all I think. No credits appear within the film.
