Burnt bricks from Nalanda's great library are still sitting at the site today, says archaeologist KK Muhammad, who spent four years working there. In this clip he walks through Nalanda's three great libraries, the students and pilgrims who came from across Asia, and how much of the site is still waiting to be excavated. He also connects Nalanda to a 66-million-year-old volcanic eruption in the Deccan, a link he presents as a possibility rather than settled fact.
Muhammad points to the accounts left by Chinese pilgrims, along with inscriptions found at the site, as the main evidence for what Nalanda taught and how it ran. He notes that a king from Sumatra, Balaputradeva, funded the library so that manuscripts could be copied and spread across the world. The conversation also covers how translations of Indian texts reached China, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia, and how Buddhist and Jain communities took to the sea routes that linked India with the region. By his estimate, about 40% of Nalanda still lies buried beneath nearby villages.
