A tool record can contain the correct diameter and still describe an assembly that cannot perform the job. Its cutting edges might be too short, the holder might enter a clamp, or the interface might not match the machine. CAM tool selection must connect the intended feature to a real cutting assembly and a justified set of operating data. In this lesson, use original length, corner and cutting-data studies to make those connections visible. Our numeric cutting values are assigned classroom inputs, not manufacturer recommendations for a particular material or tool. The reasoning is what you should transfer to a controlled shop setup. Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Machinist learners. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Select identified tools and compatible holders from feature, material and operation requirements. • Distinguish cutting length, projection, gauge length, reach, rigidity and complete assembly clearance. • Calculate original speed, feed, engagement and removal studies while qualifying actual application data. • Maintain controlled tooling records and interpret CAM and simulator checks within their actual scope. CHAPTERS 0:00 The cutter diameter is only the beginning 0:45 Start with the operation and feature requirements 2:17 Calculate an original assembly length 3:02 Test reach and full-wall cutting separately 3:48 Use the inside radius to screen cutter diameter 5:17 Explain why projection matters without inventing a prediction 6:00 Match the spindle interface and retention system 6:46 Check turning-tool shanks against centre height 8:57 Understand the holder-mode consequence 10:37 Calculate spindle speed from cutting speed 11:21 Recalculate the cutting speed after selecting rpm 12:04 Calculate feed from the effective tooth count 12:46 Keep per-tooth and per-revolution feed distinct 13:28 Update feed when a speed limit changes the plan 14:53 Calculate removal rate without claiming machine capacity 19:29 Independent practice: select limits and test the assembly 20:25 Practice answer: valid arithmetic still needs valid tooling 21:16 Make the tool record describe the intended physical process HOW TO STUDY Watch the mechanism. Explain the example aloud. Pause for practice. Recall the answers tomorrow. Next: BC N8 SOURCES AND SCOPE Mapped Machinist curriculum BC N8, PDF pages 144–145. Original teaching.
