In this Korg Wavestate sound design tutorial I recreate Soundtrack, one of the classic Roland D-50 presets and a brilliant example of layered LA synthesis-style programming.
I start by deconstructing the original D-50 patch, isolating the lower and upper partials, listening to the pitch envelopes, pulse-width character, velocity response, chorus, reverb and tuning intervals that make the sound work. Then I rebuild the idea on the Korg Wavestate using multi-layer programming, wave sequencing, velocity-switched waves, envelopes, filters, chorus, compression, reverb and delayed LFO pitch movement to capture the feel of the original Soundtrack patch.
