Sangke Grassland—legend has it that this is where the Tibetan hero King Gesar made his juniper smoke offering and was crowned king—lies in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, at an elevation of about 3,000 meters. Cradled by rolling hills, the grassland is threaded by a road that winds along the river valley—cattle and sheep grazing at their leisure on one side, a gurgling stream flowing on the other.
