Muscle after 60 is about much more than how much lean mass shows up on a body-composition report. And if you're losing weight on a GLP-1, understanding that difference becomes especially important.
In this episode of Five Pillars of Physical Function, we take a deeper look at muscle as one of the foundations of physiologic reserve—the capacity we build today so that it is available when we need it tomorrow.
We’ll look at what actually happens to lean mass during substantial weight loss, why lean mass is not the same thing as skeletal muscle, and why a reported loss of “lean mass” does not automatically mean that you lost that many pounds of muscle.
We’ll also explore why, particularly as we get older, the conversation needs to go beyond simply preserving muscle mass. Muscle quality, strength, power and function matter too.
Along the way, we’ll cover:
What “lean mass” and “dry lean mass” actually mean
What DXA, MRI, CT and bioimpedance can—and cannot—tell us
What research suggests about muscle changes during GLP-1–assisted weight loss
Why aging affects strength and power faster than muscle mass alone
Type I and Type II muscle fibers and why those fast-twitch fibers matter
Resistance training as one of our most powerful tools for healthy aging
Protein, leucine and nutrition during weight loss
Recovery, sleep, activity and, yes...creatine
My own approximately 72-pound weight-loss journey and recent body-composition changes
Why the ultimate goal isn't simply maintaining muscle—it is building capacity for life
This channel began with my GLP-1 journey, but weight loss was never meant to be the finish line.
Maintenance isn't the end of the trail. It's the trailhead to the rest of our lives.
The goal is to become stronger today, healthier tomorrow, and ready for whatever life brings.
Next in the Five Pillars series: STRENGTH. And there are some things about strength after 60 that surprised me—including why having more muscle doesn't necessarily mean you're stronger.
