You can’t control what other people say, how they behave, or what situations you encounter—but you can practice controlling how much of your energy you give them. It’s impossible to curate your entire life so that you’re never offended, criticized, challenged, disappointed, or confronted. And it’s completely normal to care about what other people think and to be affected by their words and behavior. The goal isn’t to become completely unaffected by everyone around you. The goal is to create a little space between what happens and how you respond. When someone says or does something that immediately triggers you, give yourself five seconds before reacting. Pause. Breathe. Let your nervous system settle. Remind yourself that another person’s behavior is often much more about them than it is about you. Then ask yourself: How much of my energy do I actually want to give this? You don’t have to accept every invitation to become angry, defensive, frustrated, or upset. You can acknowledge what happened without carrying it around for the rest of the day. You can choose your response intentionally instead of automatically reacting from emotion. Try reminding yourself: “This is not about me. I’m staying on my high vibe and not accepting the upset they’ve offered me.” That five-second pause can completely change the way you engage with difficult people. Instead of handing someone else control over your mood, you give yourself the opportunity to respond calmly, confidently, and intentionally. Protecting your peace doesn’t mean avoiding difficult people or pretending that nothing bothers you. It means recognizing that you get to decide what deserves your attention, your emotional energy, and your participation. The more you practice pausing before reacting, the easier it becomes to stay grounded in who you are—regardless of what everyone else is doing.
