The 10-year Treasury just passed its 2007 peak. It's now the highest since 2002. Safe money finally pays again, yet the average savings account still pays 0.37%. My friend Jay had $10,000 sitting in exactly that account, because every other option felt like a way to lose it. So I walked him through the exact order I'd follow with $10,000 right now: the $10,000 Waterfall. Six buckets: free money, put out the fire, the shield, the lockbox, tax shelters and the growth engine. We run it for three real situations (Sam, 26; Dana, 38; Lee, 55). You'll also see the government-backed investment paying almost 3% above inflation, and the one place I'd never put $10,000. 👇 If you had $10,000 today, which bucket would it go to first? ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Cold Open 1:29 The 5% World 3:26 Meet Sam, Dana and Lee 4:08 The $10,000 Waterfall 4:31 Bucket 1: Free Money 5:28 Bucket 2: Put Out the Fire 6:11 Bucket 3: The Shield 7:38 Bucket 4: The Lockbox 8:59 Bucket 5: Tax Shelters 10:35 Bucket 6: The Growth Engine 12:13 The Inflation Armor 13:08 The One Place I'd Never Put It 13:34 The Receipts 14:16 The 30-Second Waterfall 14:53 3 Traps to Avoid 15:21 What's Next 15:41 Your Turn 📊 SOURCES (current as of Oct 6, 2026) • Federal Reserve H.15 (Oct 2, 2026): Treasury yields 3-mo 4.19%, 1-yr 4.46%, 2-yr 4.83%, 5-yr 5.06%, 10-yr 5.28%, 30-yr 5.63%; 10-yr TIPS 2.92%; 1-yr bill discount rate 4.26% • Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance (Oct 1, 2026): 10-year yield hits 5.33%, the highest since 2002 · 24/7 Wall St. (Oct 6, 2026): 10-year at 5.315% on Oct 5 • S&P 500 price return year to date as of Oct 5, 2026: +13.56% (Slickcharts) • Bankrate (Oct 6, 2026): top high-yield savings 4.25% APY · Bankrate (Oct 5, 2026): top 1-year CD 4.50% APY · Fortune/Curinos (Oct 1, 2026): FDIC national average savings 0.37% • Bankrate (Sept 30, 2026): average credit card APR 19.63% · Federal Reserve G.19: 22.15% APR on accounts assessed interest • Investment Company Institute (week ended Sept 30, 2026): $7.89 trillion in money market funds · Crane 100 Money Fund Index (Sept 29, 2026): 3.67% 7-day yield • TreasuryDirect (May 1, 2026): I bond composite rate 4.26% through Oct 31, 2026; $10,000 per person per year; 1-year minimum hold • IRS: 2026 IRA limit $7,500 ($8,600 age 50+); 2026 HSA limits $4,400 self-only / $8,750 family (Rev.
