A used Chevy Bolt costs about the same as a used Toyota Corolla. So which one is cheaper to own? We followed three buyers for 10 years and counted every cost: loan, fuel, insurance, repairs, EV fees, resale value and the battery. Two of them buy the same Bolt at the same price, and they end up $7,151 apart.

THE RESULT (10 years, 13,476 miles a year, Oct 2026 prices)
• Used Bolt, charged mostly at home: $61,677
• Same Bolt, public charging only: $68,828
• Used Corolla: $75,615
WHO SHOULD BUY WHICH
• You can charge at home: the used EV is cheaper above 4,621 miles a year over 5 years, or 1,958 over 10 years.
• Public charging only: you need 8,485+ miles a year over 5 years, gas above $3.54 a gallon and charging under 51¢ per kWh.
• No battery warranty left and no battery health report: buy the gas car. One out-of-warranty pack ($14,500) in year 7 erases the home-charging lead.
SOURCES (checked Oct 8–10, 2026)
• Car prices: Kelley Blue Book fair purchase price, national (2022 Bolt EV 1LT $18,450; 2022 Corolla LE $17,810)
• Gas: AAA national average, $4.37/gal; EIA weekly retail $4.354
• Home electricity: EIA, U.S. residential average, 18.31¢/kWh (July 2026)

• Charging at home: U.S. DOE (Level 1 outlet adds 4–5 miles per hour; 80%+ of EV charging happens at home)

• Repairs: Consumer Reports EV ownership study (2020) × BLS repair price index (+52% since 2020)
• Depreciation: iSeeCars 5-year study, 2026 (EVs 57.2%, all cars 41.8%)
• Miles: FHWA, 13,476 a year
• Battery: 2026 out-of-warranty Bolt pack quotes $11,000–$18,000; Recurrent replacement study (Nov 2025)
• Bolt recall: NHTSA 21V-650; GM bulletin 22-NA-119
• Renters: Census Bureau, homeownership 65.0% (Q2 2026)
• Used EV tax credit (25E): ended for cars bought after Sept 30, 2025
Every input is listed in the calculator, and you can change any of them.
Simplifications: prices held flat in today's dollars; sales tax and standard registration left out; no home charger install (a Level 2 charger costs extra and comes out of the EV's lead); the battery failure is a stress test, not an expected cost.
