Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal, Solomon’s divided kingdom continues its downward spiral, and Elisha carries on Elijah’s prophetic ministry through extraordinary miracles. From fire falling on Mount Carmel to a miraculous end to Samaria’s famine, this reading covers dramatic displays of God’s power, judgment, faith, and provision. This is Day 23 of my daily Old Testament Bible reading series using the NIV. My goal is to spend one hour reading the Bible each day—not to reach a particular number of chapters. The chapter range reflects how far I get during the session. In this reading: 1 Kings 18–19: Elijah’s showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, the end of the drought, and God’s gentle whisper at Horeb. 1 Kings 20–22: Ahab’s victories, Naboth’s vineyard, Elijah’s judgment against Ahab’s house, and Ahab’s death in battle. 2 Kings 1–3: Elijah’s final days, his dramatic departure to heaven, Elisha’s succession, and Israel’s conflict with Moab. 2 Kings 4–5: Elisha’s miracles, including multiplying oil and food, raising a child from the dead, and healing Naaman. 2 Kings 6–7: More miracles, the siege of Samaria, and the unexpected discovery that the Aramean army has fled, ending the famine. This is also a personal time capsule—a record of ME reading the Bible that my children can return to years from now. One hour. Every day. Keep reading.
