Do you really need a 600mm lens for bird photography? Not necessarily. There are situations where having 600mm can make a huge difference. In this video, I break down when a 600mm lens is worth having, when you really need the extra reach, and how you can get great bird photos without one. I'll also show you why understanding bird behavior, choosing the right location, and getting closer to your subject matters just as much as having a longer lens. A 600mm lens gives you incredible reach, especially for small, distant or skittish birds. But that doesn't mean you need a 600mm lens to get started with bird photography. Longer is not always better, they're heavy, cumbersome, and sometime just too much. I'll explain: • When 600mm really makes a difference • What kinds of birds and situations benefit most from 600mm • When you can get away with a shorter lens • How getting closer can compensate for less reach • Why understanding bird behavior is more important than buying a bigger lens If you're trying to decide whether you should invest in a 600mm lens for bird photography, this video will help you figure out whether you actually need one or whether your money might be better spent elsewhere. If you decide you need a 600mm lens, I'm a huge fan of the Sigma 150-600 which is the lens you see in this video. Plus it's the lens that took every photo you see here. Buy it refurbished here in a Nikon mount for just over $1k: https://amzn.to/4xHtDcB If you want even more reach Sigma now sells a 60-600 which is available here: https://amzn.to/4x5ep16 0:00 Intro 0:12 The argument for buying a 600mm lens 0:22 Do you really need a 600mm lens for bird photography? 0:40 Why you should buy a 600mm lens 1:44 When you absolutely need a 600mm for bird photography 2:10 600mm alternatives 2:30 Types of birds you plan to photograph 3:10 Closing your subject distance 3:22 Distance and atmospheric distortion 3:45 Small bird photography 4:00 Understand bird behavior for better photos 4:20 My other content on the subject 4:38 Other factors to consider 5:08 What you need to know about birds 5:47 Minimum lens size for bird photography 5:58 Camera crop factor 6:12 Cropping your photos 6:55 Lens sharpness sweet spots 7:24 Testing your current lens 7:46 Downsides of owning a 600mm lens 8:40 More important factors for improving our bird photos 8:49 600mm may not be right for you 9:09 When to buy one 9:20 Don't buy one if ... 9:37 My minimum lens sizes 9:58 Do this before buying a 600mm lens 10:47 Watch my other bird photography videos 11:22 Rent a lens first 11:45 Conclusion
