This mansoon try karnataka's bisi bele bhat | on onion garlic khichdi | A 100-year-old recipe from the Mysore Palace #khichdi #khichuri #nooniongarlic #healthyfood #onepotmeal #bisibelebhath About this recipe: Bisi Bele Bath (Bisibelebath) is a famous traditional dish from the South Indian state of Karnataka. The name comes from Kannada: Bisi = hot Bele = lentils (toor dal) Bath/Bhath = a rice dish So it literally means “hot lentil rice.” It is a hearty one-pot meal made with: Rice, toor dal (pigeon peas), mixed vegetables such as carrots, beans, peas, potato, and capsicum. Tamarind for a tangy flavor, jaggery for a slight sweetness and a special spice blend called 'Bisi Bele Bath' powder. Ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and cashews for the final tempering. The dish has a thick, porridge-like consistency and is traditionally served piping hot with a drizzle of ghee, papad, boondi, or potato chips. It is one of Karnataka’s most iconic comfort foods and is commonly available in South Indian restaurants. Authentic Karnataka-Style Bisi Bele Bath Ingredients: 1 cup rice ½ cup toor dal 2 cups mixed vegetables — carrot, beans, peas, potato, capsicum 1 small onion, (optional) 1 small tomato 2 tbsp tamarind pulp 1 tsp jaggery 2–3 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath powder ¼ tsp turmeric Salt to taste 2–3 tbsp ghee 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 dried red chilli Curry leaves 2 tbsp cashews 5–6 cups water Method: Wash rice and dal together and pressure-cook with turmeric and plenty of water until very soft. Cook the chopped vegetables separately until tender but not mushy. In a large pot, combine the cooked rice-dal and vegetables. Add Bisi Bele Bath powder, tamarind pulp, jaggery and salt. Add water and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The consistency should be soft and slightly runny. Heat ghee and temper with mustard seeds, dried red chilli, curry leaves and cashews. Pour the tempering over the Bisi Bele Bath and mix well. Serve hot with a generous drizzle of ghee, papad or boondi. Secret for authentic taste: Don't make it too dry—the real Bisi Bele Bath should have a creamy, almost porridge-like consistency, with a beautiful balance of spicy, tangy and mildly sweet flavours.
