There is a traffic light on a federal interstate, and it has been there for sixty-two years.
Twelve places where the Interstate Highway System stops doing the one thing it promised. A traffic light on a federal interstate. A yield sign at the end of one. A road that lifts out of the way for a ship. And two that do not exist at all.
Every entry has a document behind it. A statute, a court case, a state highway record. No rumours, and no "abandoned" mysteries.
Why does a federal interstate stop at a set of traffic lights in a Pennsylvania village? Why was it cheaper to keep it that way for six decades than to fix it? And why do two of these gaps have no pavement on the other side at all?
The countdown:
Interstate 516, Savannah, Georgia
Interstate 587, Kingston, New York
Interstate 180, Cheyenne, Wyoming
Interstate 19, Nogales, Arizona
Interstate 78, Jersey City, New Jersey
Interstate 70, Breezewood, Pennsylvania
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Interstate 95 and 495
Interstate 70, the Wheeling Tunnel, West Virginia
Interstate 75, the Mackinac Bridge, Michigan
Interstate 93, Franconia Notch, New Hampshire
Interstate 49, Fort Smith to Texarkana, Arkansas
The Interstate 69 corridor
Number six is the one that surprises people most, because almost nobody sitting in that traffic knows the bridge is opening.
Every date and figure in this film traces to a record you can check.
