This video tells the extraordinary story of Pope Benedict IX, one of the most controversial figures in the history of the papacy and the only pope known to have ruled the Church on three separate occasions. Born into the powerful Counts of Tusculum, Benedict IX became pope while still a young man during the turbulent eleventh century, when influential noble families competed fiercely for control of Rome and the papacy. His reign was marked by political conflict, public unrest, and repeated challenges to his authority. Driven from Rome more than once, Benedict reclaimed the papal throne on multiple occasions through shifting alliances and the support of powerful noble factions. His unprecedented three separate pontificates reflected the instability of the medieval Church during this era. Perhaps the most famous episode of his career was his decision to resign the papacy, reportedly accepting payment from his godfather, Pope Gregory VI, who hoped to restore stability to the Church. The unusual transaction, combined with rival claimants to the throne of St. Peter, plunged the papacy into one of the greatest constitutional crises of the Middle Ages until the intervention of Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor. This gentle bedtime documentary explores Pope Benedict IX as a story of power, ambition, political intrigue, and one of the most remarkable chapters in medieval Church history—told in a calm and reflective way to help you rest. #HistoryForSleep #PopeBenedictIX #MedievalHistory Want more sleepy history?
