Genesis 1-5 isn’t just about how everything began… It’s about how everything shifted. Adam and Eve weren’t created broken or insecure. They were created at peace. When they chose the forbidden fruit, it wasn’t just about eating something. It was about trusting themselves more than God. The moment they realized they were naked and tried to cover themselves, humanity started doing what we still do. We try to manage shame instead of confess it. We cover what we don’t want exposed. We blame when we’re confronted. And if we’re honest, we’ve all done it. God’s words in the garden carried both consequence and promise. Even while addressing sin, He spoke redemption. That alone should humble us. The curse on the ground, the pain, the return to dust, none of it was random. Sin changed how life feels. Work feels heavier. Relationships feel strained. Trust feels fragile. Genesis doesn’t just explain history. It explains why our world feels the way it does. Cain’s story shows how quietly pride can grow. God warned him that sin was crouching at the door. He still chose it. If we’re honest, we’ve felt that same warning in our own hearts and ignored it too. The mark placed on Cain reminds us that even when we deserve full judgment, God still shows restraint. He disciplines, but He doesn’t abandon. That should lead us to repentance, not arrogance. Genesis 1-5 isn’t distant. It’s a mirror. It reminds us that the struggle didn’t start with us, but it continues when we resist correction. Before there was a flood, there was a choice. And we’re still making ours.
