NS Power on Union Pacific! A Glimpse of the Future? | Durant, Oklahoma Railfanning, UP Choctaw Sub.

Six trains, two Norfolk Southern leaders, some unusual Kiamichi switching, and one of the coolest railfanning angles I've found in Durant! We start with a northbound Union Pacific empty grain train pulling into the Durant siding for a crew change. Soon after, its loaded southbound counterpart rolls by on the main before NS 7524 leads a southbound loaded ethanol train through town—with an AWESOME horn! Next, Union Pacific's LBE-48 Kiamichi interchange job performs what I call the "Hardy Farms Turn-Around." Rather than bringing a full cut of interchange traffic off the Kiamichi, the crew works a small group of cars for Hardy Farms and uses the Durant siding to run around the train. The cars are backed down the siding, the locomotives return up the siding and head south on the main, then reconnect to the opposite end before continuing toward Denison. Another southbound manifest follows with Norfolk Southern SD70ACe No. 1064 leading—giving us TWO NS leaders on Union Pacific in one day! With the proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger currently working its way through the regulatory process, seeing NS power leading UP trains is especially interesting. Finally, we head somewhere a little different: the top floor of the Choctaw Casino & Resort parking garage! What started as an escape from the summer heat turned into one of the coolest railfanning locations I've tried in Durant. From high above the tracks, the southbound autorack almost looks like a model train, while its horn echoes through the parking garage below. Keep an eye out for some great graffiti on the autoracks—including a snowman making a rather ironic appearance in the Oklahoma summer heat! 🚂 TRAINS FEATURED: 1.
