For this part of the trip, we decided to hire a rental car — something that gives us a little more freedom, a slower pace, and the chance to enjoy both the destination and the journey. 🛣️There were roadworks along the highway, with expected queues and frequent slowdowns, but even in those pauses the drive still felt calm. 🎪We arrived around 12:30 midday and eased into the town with a wander through the Port Douglas Sunday Market. It was the perfect way to settle in — browsing local stalls, enjoying a light lunch, and soaking up the relaxed tropical atmosphere. 🏨This time, my accommodation wasn’t my usual style. It was an un serviced apartment — and with no elevator. As over 50 travellers, carrying luggage up three stories felt daunting. But with a little adjustment, we decided to stay, because it truly was a beautiful property despite those challenges. We often value consistent service, staff presence, and human interaction… yet sometimes travel asks us to adapt. A few small adjustments — and then the holiday continued. 🌇As evening arrived, we wandered out for a gentle walk to Rex Smeal Park. The park turned into one of the most peaceful corners of Port Douglas. Somewhere in the background, music floated through the air… rhythmic, lively, and clearly part of a culture I couldn’t quite identify. It added a beautiful layer to the evening. As we turned onto Macrossan Street, the town greeted us with a warm, glowing welcome. Thousands of tiny fairy lights shimmered above the road, draped across the palms and storefronts like a soft canopy of stars. That’s why I chose to stay here — right in the heart of Macrossan Street. And that brings Day 5 to a peaceful close. From the sunset at Rex Smeal Park to the quiet glow of the streets guiding us back to the hotel, it was a simple, beautiful evening in Port Douglas.
