Most of us know Psalm 23 by heart. We hear it at funerals. We stitch it on pillows. And we rush past the middle — the valley — because we already know how it ends.
In this episode we read Psalm 23 slowly, the way its first listeners heard it: shepherd culture in the ancient Near East, why "I shall not want" is a working promise, what the rod and the staff each meant, why the grammar shifts from "he" to "You" in the valley, and what a table set "in the presence of my enemies" claimed in a world of hospitality bonds. We finish with echoes in Ezekiel, Isaiah, and John 10, plus three questions for your group.

Questions for your group
1. Where in your life right now are you asking the Shepherd to lead you around a valley, when the psalm only promises he will walk through it with you?
2. The rod and the staff comfort in different ways: defense, and guidance. Which do you find easier to trust God for, and which do you resist?
3. The table is set in the presence of enemies, not after they leave. What would it look like to receive God's hospitality without waiting for the danger to disappear?
