What happens when a Viking River Cruise takes you up a mountain to a nearly 1,000-year-old Benedictine monastery? You get incredible views, spectacular Baroque architecture, beautiful gardens…and apricot liqueur. 🇦🇹
During our Viking river cruise through Austria, our included excursion from Krems took us to Göttweig Abbey (Stift Göttweig), a working Benedictine monastery overlooking Austria’s beautiful Wachau Valley.
In this video, we explore the abbey grounds and gardens, learn a little about the monastery’s long history, see the incredible church and Imperial Staircase, and sample products made with the famous Wachauer Marille — Wachau apricot.
One of the things that fascinated me most was seeing firsthand how a monastery like Göttweig could historically be much more than a religious institution. Agriculture, vineyards, land, local communities and religion were all interconnected—and standing above the Wachau Valley really helped put that history into perspective.
And yes…we sampled the apricot liqueur. 😄
If Göttweig Abbey is offered as an included excursion on your Viking Danube cruise, hopefully this video gives you an idea of what to expect.
Thanks for letting Peach Planned It be part of your travel planning. We’ll see you in the next adventure.
