Most people know Chitale Bandhu for its Bhakarwadi.
But the story started with a man who lost everything.
In this episode of the Create Wealth Podcast, Sandeep Jethwani sits down with Indraneel Chitale, a fourth-generation entrepreneur building one of India’s most iconic food brands.
His great-grandfather, Bhaskar Ganesh Chitale, lost his entire cattle business in just a few days during a famine in the 1930s. With no money and a family to support, he rebuilt from scratch—starting with milk, railways, and a small town called Bhilawadi.
What followed is an 80+ year journey of survival, product-market fit, distribution mastery, and brand building.
In this episode, they break down how Chitale transitioned from a B2B dairy supplier to a dominant B2C brand, why Bhakarwadi became a cult product, and how scarcity, taste, and timing created one of India’s most loved snacks.
They also go deep into the business: how a ₹100 product is split across manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, why most FMCG profits are made in distribution (not manufacturing), and what it really takes to scale from 300 kg/day to 2500 kg/hour.
Indraneel also shares how the company adapted technology from croissant machines in Europe, why hiring a family business coach changed decision-making, and how brand investments like Sachin Tendulkar actually drive distribution, not just consumer recall.
The conversation goes further into quick commerce, changing consumer behavior, premiumization in food, and why the next phase of growth will come from digital-first SKUs and healthier products.
They also discuss the realities of running a multi-generation family business—trust, conflict, patience—and why building “moats” in Indian FMCG is harder than it looks.
