👉 So what do you think happened? Let us know in the comments — and subscribe for the next case:    / @nightowlfilestv   In a Civil War fort on the southernmost island in the United States, a doll sits in a glass case — and every day between one and three letters arrive addressed to it. You can read them yourself, on the wall beside the case: not the words of credulous people performing a ritual, but something harder to dismiss. This is the record of Robert the Doll, laid out plainly and tested version by version. Gene Otto was four years old when Robert arrived, and for years the household lived inside an arrangement two adults and one child all had a stake in — a plate turned up, objects moved, a second voice distinctly deeper than a four-year-old's range, and giggling that carried down from the attic after the doll was confined there. Gene was clever enough to give the doll his own name and build an entire second identity around it. But the case does not close on a clever boy. In the spring of 1945 Gene came home, moved with Annette into 534 Eaton Street — the house with the turret — and painted in the studio with Robert placed in the window. When Gene died, the house passed to Myrtle Reuter, a new owner who did not know there was anything in the chest in the attic. She had no theory to defend. She kept the doll because she took it out of the chest, and it looked at her. Here is the whole file: the Otto record, the first entirely unconnected witnesses, and the gap left visible between them. We test what each voice had a stake in, and what no one did. Then we leave the question with you — the one the letters keep answering. The letters arrive tomorrow. What do you make of the record? 💬 If Gene Otto built the whole thing as a child's fiction, how do you explain Myrtle Reuter — a stranger with no theory to defend — keeping the doll because it looked at her? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▸ Wikipedia / Robert (doll) (1904) — The Steiff Company of Germany manufactured the doll in 1904; a Steiff company historian confirmed to the Fort East Martello Museum that it was most likely ma… ▸ Wikipedia / Robert (doll) (1900) — Robert Eugene 'Gene' Otto was born on October 25, 1900, in the house his father Thomas Otto built in 1898 at 534 Eaton Street, Key West, Florida — the same h… ▸ kwahs.org / Key West Art and Historical Society — Robert the Doll stands 40 inches tall (approximately 100 cm), is stuffed with wood wool (excelsior), wears a sailor suit that museum staff believe was one of… ▸ wikitree.com (June 24, 1974) — Robert Eugene 'Gene' Otto died on June 24, 1974, from complications of Parkinson's disease; after his death, Annette sold 534 Eaton Street — and the new owne… ▸ kwahs.org / Key West Art and Historical Society (1974) — Myrtle Reuter bought the house after Gene Otto's death in 1974 and lived there for twenty years with Robert; she reported that the doll moved around the hous… ▸ Wikipedia / Robert (doll) (1994) — In 1994, after twenty years with the doll, Myrtle Reuter donated Robert to the Key West Art and Historical Society, which placed it on permanent display at t… ▸ Wikipedia / Robert (film) (August 24, 2015) — British horror film Robert, written and directed by Andrew Jones, was released on August 24, 2015; the film is explicitly based on the Key West haunted doll… ▸ Wikipedia / Robert (doll) — Gene Otto was a professionally exhibited painter whose work was shown at the Lowe Art Museum in Miami and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; his attachment to t… Photos (Wikimedia Commons): "Robert The Doll" — Cayobo (CC BY 1.0); "Key West FL East Martello Tower Museum05" — Ebyabe (CC BY-SA 3.0); "Church spire of the American Cathedral in Paris" — Elliott Brown (CC BY 2.0); "Eaton Street House Interior, Key West Florida 1975" (Living Room, Sitting) — Florida Keys--Public Libraries (CC BY 2.0); Key West photographs 1860–1938 and the 1884 bird's-eye view of Key West — public domain. #robertthedoll #hauntedcase #unexplained #keywest #mystery Chapters: 0:00 Intro 2:09 The household record 8:03 The wider witness pool 12:49 The institutional record 17:35 The explanations, tested 23:44 What remains Music: "Distant Tension", "Lightless Dawn", "Long Note Four", "Penumbra", "Long Note One" — Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
