From the glory of Le Mans to the silence of a Yorkshire factory, this is the remarkable rise and tragic fall of Jowett Cars — one of Britain's most ambitious and forgotten motor manufacturers.
Founded in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Jowett built its reputation on engineering innovation, reliability and a determination to challenge Britain's established car makers. From its distinctive flat-twin engines to the revolutionary Jowett Javelin and the stylish Jupiter sports car, this small Yorkshire manufacturer dared to compete with some of the biggest names in British motoring.
In 1950, the Jowett Jupiter achieved a remarkable class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, proving that a small British manufacturer could compete on one of motorsport's greatest stages. It was a moment of international triumph for a company that had spent decades building cars in the heart of industrial Yorkshire.
Yet behind the racing success, serious problems were emerging. Production difficulties, financial pressures and disruption to vital component supplies threatened the company's future. Despite its engineering achievements and sporting victories, Jowett struggled to survive in an increasingly competitive post-war motor industry.
By 1954, just four years after its Le Mans triumph, car production at Jowett had come to an end. The factory that had once represented Yorkshire's automotive ambitions would never again produce Jowett cars.
In this documentary, we explore the history of the Jowett factory, the remarkable machines it produced, the people behind its success and the circumstances that brought one of Britain's most distinctive car manufacturers to its knees.
How did a company capable of winning at Le Mans disappear from British car production in just four years? And could the collapse of Jowett Cars have been prevented?
Discover the forgotten story of British engineering, motorsport glory and the industrial decline of a once-proud Yorkshire car maker.
